‘I WILL MAKE YOU ENEMIES OF ONE ANOTHER.’ (Genesis 3: 9-24)
In the ‘judgement’ that God pronounces on the evil spirit, on the
woman and on the man there is no mention of an amnesty for the fault and going
back to the state they were in before.
They will now have to live out the consequences of their decision. This is symbolised in the sufferings of childbirth
for the woman and the resistance of the soil to man’s efforts to harness it to grow
food. And that has been the struggle: we
live out the consequences of our personal decisions – good or bad – and the
decisions that society makes. We cannot avoid that enmity between us and the
forces that want to trap and oppress us.
We are enemies. And our life is a
battle against these forces which we find within us and outside us.
