A WOMAN IN CHILDBIRTH

PRAYER PAUSE

Friday 6 May 2016

A WOMAN IN CHILDBIRTH

Pause. Enter into the stillness of God within.

Reading: “A woman in childbirth suffers, because her time has come; but when she has given birth to the child she forgets her suffering in her joy that a person has been born into the world.” (John 16:20-23)

Reflection. John does not use parables: the vine is one, and this. The raw image of childbirth and the suffering and joy it brings is a perfect mirror of our experience. Leicester City struggled – agonised – for months but now their joy is complete. The woman begins with having no idea of what childbirth really is; still less how her child will be. It is a totally new experience, and seeing a new mother lost in contemplation of her child is a wondrous sight. It is a parable of our journey. We struggle but we have no idea of the joy that beckons us.

Prayer. Lord, strengthen us in our struggles and comfort us with the vision of a new birth, a new creation, a new world. Amen
