PRAYER MOMENT

ISRAEL WAS
DEFEATED
Pause. Enter into the stillness of God
within.
Reading: “So the Philistines joined battle
and Israel was defeated … and the ark of God was captured too.” (I Sam 4:1-11)
Reflection. It was a disaster! Israel was
defeated once and then drew in desperation on the one symbol of its cultural
and spiritual strength - the Ark of the Covenant – calling on God to rescue
them from their own incompetence. And that was a disaster too! Sometimes, instead
of finding solutions to our problems, we discover they just get worse. It all
becomes too much. For Israel, this sets the scene for the great interventions
of Samuel, the servant of God. For us, we are called to see that, if things
seem to be ever so bad, God is standing at the door ready to help. We are
invited to find the inner strength to turn to him.
Prayer. Lord, help us to really trust you
are with us. Amen.
