THE SABBATH IS FOR US
Pause. Be in the presence
of God.
Reading. “The Sabbath
was made for man; not man for the sabbath!” (Mark 2:23-28)
Reflection. Law
must have come into society early on. It is a guide and guarantee of right
order. Law permits freedom to flourish. But it can be used to promote the power
of individuals and groups in society. It can oppress people. Then it becomes an
abuse and a tyranny. Jesus was well aware of this when he saw how the Pharisees
twisted the purpose of law. The Church too has often so insisted on the law
that it has forgotten compassion. If the law is there and is respected and
recognised then it doesn’t have to be always applied. We are called to live the
tension of having laws and respecting them but not necessarily always applying
them.
Prayer. Lord, teach
us to have compassionate hearts, always ready to forgive and be forgiven. Amen.
