THE KEYSTONE

PRAYER PAUSE

Monday, 5 June 2017, Boniface of Germany

THE KEYSTONE

Pause. Enter into the stillness of God within.

Reading: “It is the stone rejected bythe builders that became the keystone.” (Mark 12:1-12).

Reflection. We return to “ordinary” time after the exalted thoughts of the Ascension and Pentecost. We land in the midst of Jesus’ public life and find him telling the story of the vineyard. The tenants reject the approaches of the owners and maltreat them, finally killing his own son. The implication was clear to the Jews listening and to the early Church who recorded it, but we can miss the impact in our own situation today. Who are the “key” people in our community, our society? Who are those who can change our hearts from hearts of stone into hearts of  flesh. For example, comfortable Europe was shocked by the flood of migrants. Some reacted generously, others built walls. That may be far away but there are those we meet each day whom we can “reject” while they in fact have a message for us.

Prayer. Lord, help us to open our hearts to those we would not naturally welcome.  Amen.
