ASCENDING
AND DESCENDING
Pause. Enter into the stillness of God
within.
Reading: “You will see heaven laid open and,
above the Son of Man, the angels of God ascending and descending.” (John 1:47-51)
Reflection. The Scriptures give scant mention to
the angels but the message comes through that there are good spirits as well as
bad who surround us on our journey. We know the names of three of them and what
they did. The common threads are announcing good news (Gabriel), guidance and
protection (Raphael) and battling evil (Michael). God works through others and
we bring it home by being “angels” to one another through words of comfort and encouragement,
through protection of vulnerable people and through struggling against evil in
ourselves and in the world.
Prayer. Lord, we
thank you for the consolation, protection and guidance you give us. Help us to
struggle against evil wherever we meet it. Amen
