PRAYER PAUSE
Monday 14 May 2018, Matthias
the apostle
YOU
WILL ALL BE SCATTERED
Enter
into the stillness of God within.
Reading: “Listen; the time will come – in fact it has
already come - when you will all be scattered, each going his own way and
leaving me alone.” (John 16:29-33)
Reflection. This is not the official
reading for St Matthias but is for Monday of week seven of Easter. Just at the moment when things were coming
together and the disciples were beginning to understand, Jesus tells them they
will be scattered. It is as though there
is a time for prepration for war and
then the war begins. And many people
enjoy a honeymoon, both in their married life or religious life or just their
life generally, and suddenly things fall apart.
We are “scattered” – maybe physically but more often interiorly. We find our solidity shaken, our assurance
threatened and our concentration falters.
This notion of “scattering” comes up in the Jewish scriptures – the wandering
in the desert and the exile in Babylon, but it also come in the Acts when the
honeymoon at Jereusalem is over. So it
can be with us.
Prayer. Lord, give us the
steadiness of the Holy Spirit to “gather us” when we feel scattered. Amen
