TO
SEE ME IS TO SEE THE FATHER
Enter
into the stillness of God within.
Reading: “To have seen me is to have seen the Father,
so how can you say, ‘Let us see the Father”? (John 14:6-14)
Reflection. In the final long
conversation of Jesus with his diciples as recorded by John over several chapters
we see a growing revelation of what it is “to know the Father.” The disciples could not possibly have
understaood what he was saying at the time.
This is the mature reflection of a man decades later. He is inviting the disciples to see beyond
his physical appearance to what Mary saw when she sat at his feet while Martha
was busy in the kitchen. We know the disciples had a problem recognising him
when he appeared to them after rising from the dead. Why could they not know
him? We normally answer this by saying simply, “There was something different
about him.” We cannot go further. And this same blockage is described here. The
disciples cannot, as yet, penetrate beyond what they could see and touch. But the
reality is there before them, and us.
Prayer. Lord, help us to know you
and so to know the Father who sent you to be with us and walk with us on our return
journey to Him. Amen
