IT
HAS BEEN DECIDED BYTHE HOLY SPIRIT AND BY US
Enter
into the stillness of God within.
Reading: “It has been decided by the Holy Spirit and by
us not to saddle you with any burden beyond these essentials …” (Acts 15:22-31)
Reflection. Each year the liturgy gives
us these astoinishing words in the Easter season. The early disciples are so
full o confidence! They are sure that the way forward is to drop the provisions
of the law that distinguish Jews from others and open the way to baptism to
everyone without burdening them with Jewish customs. It takes some courage to break from a twelve
hundred year tradition! And also they speak for the Holy Spirit! The disciples
really have taken over the authority of Jesus who said “You have heard it said of
old … but I say to you …” This confidence is now their – and ours too to grasp.
Our baptism gives it to us. We too are
to witness with courage to the people we live among and boldly live what the
gospel calls us to..
Prayer. Lord, we ask to live with the
confidence our baptism gives us. Help us to to have courage in the face of challenges
that come to us. Amen
