A LITTLE WHILE

PRAYER PAUSE

A LITTLE WHILE

Enter into the stillness of God within.

Reading:  “A little while you will no longer see me, and again a little while, you will see me.” (John 16:16-20)

Reflection. The disciples puzzled over this saying of Jesus. They sought to understand it litereally and indeed it did apply that way.  He would go away in death and then come back. But Jesus is giving us a more widely applicable saying. Life is full of absences and arrivals, sorrows and joys,.  At times we are crushed by worry and pain. And then there are moments of relief and happiness. Much of it has to do with our attitude.  How do we face pain and worry?  Jesus gives the example of a woman in childbirth, in pain because her time has come.  But then there is the joy of a new life. Each event, be it ever so painful, has the seeds of joy hidden in it. James Stockdale was a prisoner for eight years in solitary confinement in the Viet Nam war.  But he kept sane and hopeful by tapping on the wall in a “conversation” with his neighbours. Living for others kept him going until the moment of release.

Prayer. Lord, help us see each situation through the lens of hope. Teach us to develop an attitude of seeing your promise in all things.  Amen
