SHE
WOULD TAKE NO REFUSAL
Enter
into the stillness of God within.
Reading: “If you really think me a true believer in the
Lord,” Lydia said, “come and stay with us”; and she would take no refusal.” (Acts
16:11-15)
Reflection. As we move into the last
period of Easter there is regular reference to the gift of the Holy Spirit. “The
Spirit will be my witness”, says Jesus, “and you will be my witnesses”. (Today’s
gospel, John 15:26 – 16:4) The two
witnesses seem to merge. When Paul crossed
to Europe from Asia he meets Lydia, a formidable lady who clearly has recieved
the Holy Spirit and comes to insist Paul stays with her. Pope Francis has asked
us this month to pray for a deepening of a sense of vocation among lay people;
that they “respond with creativity to the challenges that face the world today”.
Lydia could help us here. Sometimes lay people
have their suggestions brushed aside by priests. Perhaps they could learn a
thing or two from Lydia! “She would take no refusal”.
Prayer. Lord, help us to insist
with ourselves and others when we sense we are guided by the Spirit. Amen
