PRAYER PAUSE
Wednesday 8 March 2017
THEY
REPENTED
Pause. Enter into the stillness of God
within.
Reading: “On Judgement day the people of
Nineveh will stand up with the people of this generation and condemn it,
because when Jonah preached they repented; and there is something greater than
Jonah here.” (Luke 11:29-32)
Reflection. Apart from this sory in the Hebrew
Scriptures there is no independent evidence of a mass conversion of the people
of Nineveh! But that should not disturb us. The point of the story - about the
whale and all that - is the message of conversion which Jesus himself takes up
in the gospel. ”Conversion” is an amazing experience which we can never tire of
reflecting on. We know of Paul, Augustine, Francis and Ignatius. But these are
only outstanding ones. In countless lives, including our own, we see this astonishing
opening to mystery, a life beyond the ordinary to which we are called ever more
deeply..
Prayer. Lord, help
us to be open to your call to us during this season and let us not block that
call in others by our thoughtless words or actions. Amen.
