I WAS A STRANGER

PRAYER PAUSE

Monday 6 March 2017

I WAS  A STRANGER

Pause. Enter into the stillness of God within.

Reading: “I was a stranger and you made me welcome.” (Mathew 25:31-46)

Reflection. The scene described in Matthew 25, where all the nations are gathered and there is a separating out of sheep and goats, has been called the ‘Last Judgement’. What is striking is the simple qualification needed to “possess the kingdom prepared for you.” It is to have shown mercy to those in need: the hungry, the stranger, the one in prison. There is no mention of faith or  baptism. But it is clear that the compassionate person already shows “faith” even if they do not call it that. The role of the Church will always be to stoke the fires of faith whether people are explicit or implicit in their faith.

Prayer. Lord, teach us, above all, to be compassionate. Amen.
