THE SORT OF FAST THAT PLEASES

PRAYER PAUSE

Friday 3 March 2017

THE SORT OF FAST THAT PLEASES

Pause. Enter into the stillness of God within.

Reading: “Is not this the sort of fast that pleases me: to break unjust fetters.” (Isaiah 58:1-9)

Reflection. The “greatest” commandment is to love one another. Jesus bases his whole message, his “proclamation” of the reign of God, on love, on relationships. Lent is our time to look at those relationships and notice how, even in our own circle of relations, friends and acquaintances, we are often blind to the cries of others for a word  a smile, a moment when we sit down together and listen. There are more serious “unjust fetters” around today – human trafficking, hostility to migrants and people who are different – but closing our hearts to others can also knock at our own door – however “good” we may be tempted to think we are!

Prayer. Lord, make us sensitive to our relationships with others – even those we meet briefly. Amen.
