RENOUNCES
HIS INTEGRITY
Pause. Enter into the stillness of God
within.
Reading: “When the upright man renounces his
integrity to commit sin and dies because if this, he dies because if the evil
he himself has committed.” (Ezekiel 18:21-28)
Reflection. A week into Lent and we reflect on
the terrible responsibility of sin. A person “dies” in the sense that they
choose to live a dead life, even though they are still alive, because of sin.
“Sin” is that little word we use to express our turning away from life. And the
terrifying thing is: it is our responsibility. We do it. We cannot blame anyone
else. There may be many circumstances that cause a person to sin and our
prisons are full of people who are “victims” of circumstances. They have a hugely
diminished responsibility for their actions.. But the bottom line is: we are
responsible. We are also responsible when we choose life. The choice is as old
as history and is ever urgent
Prayer. Lord, help
us to choose life. Help us to overcome that voice within us that wants to lead
us astray. Amen.
