PRAYER PAUSE

TAKE
THE JEW BY THE SLEEVE
Pause. Enter into the stillness
of God within.
Reading: They “will take the Jew by
the sleeve and say, ‘We want to go with you, since we have learnt that God is
with you.’” (Zechariah 8:20-23)
Reflection. Zechariah gives us the
picture of the nations catching hold of the Jews by the sleeve and saying, “You
know the way to Jerusalem. Show us! We want to go there with you.” The gospel
for today (Luke 9:51-56) tells us, “Jesus resolutely took the road to
Jerusalem.” So we have the joy of the people of the earth setting out for
Jerusalem, that is, the place where God reigns, and at the same time we have mention
of the cost. For Jesus was on his way to his death in Jerusalem and he knew it.
Combining the two readings we sense the joy of the people of God on their
pilgrim journey while at the same time we are a people conscious that it is a
journey of resolutely confronting the evil in our world and in us.
Prayer. Lord, give us the courage
to “set out for Jerusalem” in your footsteps. Amen.
