NOWHERE TO LAY HIS HEAD

PRAYER PAUSE

Wednesday 4 October 2017, Francis

NOWHERE TO LAY HIS HEAD

Pause. Enter into the stillness of God within.

Reading: “Foxes have holes and the birds of th air have nests but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.” (Luke 9:57-62)

Reflection. Francis of Assisi, in his poverty and ceaseless journeying, comes closest to the life of Jesus. From the moment he changed his way of life from a merchant to that of a poverello he lived out the simplicity and urgency of Jesus as he announced the kingdom of God in the towns and villages of Israel. He lived the “equipment rule” – “Take no purse with you, no haversack, no sandals” (Luke 10:4) – to the fullest. He was direct, simple and immediate in the way he lived the joy of the gospel once he had discovered the treasure hiddn in the field. There was a joy and lightness about the life of Francis that made people realise what the kingdom of God looks like and Pope Francis reflects that same joy in his ministry today.

Prayer. Lord, help us to live the joy of the gospel and may our joy encourage and console others. Amen.
