THE SPIRIT
GIVES LIFE
Pause. Enter into the stillness of God
within.
Reading: “It is the spirit that gives life,
the flesh has nothing to offer.” (John 6:60-69).
Reflection. This is the solemn conclusion of the
long chapter dealing with the bread of life. There are the two ways; one of the
flesh, one of the spirit. The Jews, representing humanity in its journey of
discovery, are blocked on the level of the flesh, the material. And many today
cannot go beyond that level. They want tangible results, immediate
satisfaction. But it is the spirit that gives enduring results and permanent
satisfaction. It involves “losing one’s
life” by acts that go beyond “the flesh.” It involves stretching all our powers
to pay attention to the invisible, the intangible, the hidden. But to those who
try to walk this path Jesus promises “life”, real life. And he gives it.
Prayer. Lord, help us to work for the
bread that lasts. Amen.
