PRAYER PAUSE
Friday, 5 May 2017, Blessed Edmund
Rice, Founder of the Christian Brothers
SCALES FELL
FROM HIS EYES
Pause. Enter into the stillness of God
within.
Reading: “Immediately it was as though scales
fell from Saul’s eyes and he could see again.” (Acts 9:1-20).
Reflection. We celebrate today a man recently
honoured by the Church: Edmund Rice (died 1843). The community of teachers he
founded pioneered education in Ireland and abroad in the nineteenth century and
the scales fell from the eyes of millions as a result of his work. Education in
our time has moved from “the experience of authority to the authority of
experience.” It has moved from being a handing down of a fixed body of
knowledge to facilitating the exploration of the wonder of creation. It is not
everyone who realises that this is the gateway to the divine.
Prayer. Lord, thank you for the gift of
education. May we carry our curiosity about creation further; may our search lead
us to you. Amen.
