NEW WINE
Pause. Enter into the stillness of God
within.
Reading: “No; they put new wine into fresh skins
and both are preserved.” (Matt 9:14-17)
Reflection. John the Baptist’s disciples
hesitated before following Jesus. He did not seem to fulfil the tradition of
John. But John was the best of the old. Now there is something new here, Jesus
explained. The harvest looks quite different from the sowing, even though
without the sowing there would be no harvest. This is new wine and it needs new
containers. The early Church summed up the new wine in three words: faith, hope
and love. Faith is the turning to God and accepting his word. Hope is the trust
that God will make all things well, and love is a turning towards others in
compassion and service.
Prayer. Lord, may we drink deeply of the new
wine you give us. Amen
