WHAT
AUTHORITY HAVE YOU?
Enter
into the stillness of God within.
Reading: “The chief priests and the scribes and the
elders came to Jesus and said to him, ‘What authority have you for acting like
this?’” (Mark 11:11-26)
Reflection. The origin of the word ‘authority’
seems to come from augere, to
grow. Authority is what enables growth. We use the word a lot but perhaps we think it
has more to do with control rather than growth.
Certainly the chief priests and the others were into control and Jesus
was a threat to their control of the people.
But Jesus was not interested in control. His mission was to enable
growth, to set people free to develop their capability, to discover the joy of
life in their ineer depth, to open them to the Father - the source of
life. None of this was on the then
leaders’ agenda and so the confrontation continued. It would end in the death
of Jesus, a death that would give that life that he promised.
Prayer. Lord, may we be open to the
gift of life in all its fullness. Amen
