TOOK
THEM BY SURPRISE
Enter
into the stillness of God within.
Reading: “’Give to Ceasar what belongs to Ceasar and to
God what belongs to God.’ This reply
took them completely by surprise.” (Mark 12:13-17)
Reflection. The Pharisees expected
Jesus to answer their question about paying tax with a standard answer. But Jesus lifts the dialogue to another
level. It is not a matter of obeying the
law but of discovering what is the law.
When Edmund Rice started his schools in Ireland education of Cathooics
was still ilegal. He broke that law in order to keep a higher law. Ireland went on to have a Christian Brothers’
school in virtually every town in the country and soon they spread abroad, even
to Zambia and Zimbabwe. So the question
arises: what laws are we keeping – Ceasar’s or God’s. If we are honest we have to admit that Ceasar’s
are often safer and more convenient. God’s
laws are more demanding. They ask me to
go beyond safety and convenience and stride out on a “road less travelled.”
Prayer. Lord, teach us to discern
the customs and ways we have become accustomed to see if they are your ways –
or Ceasar’s. Amen
