PRAYER PAUSE
Tuesday 21 June
2016, Aloysius Gonzaga
OVERCOMES
THE WORLD
Pause. Enter into the stillness of God
within.
Reading: “Every child of God overcomes the
world. And this is the victory that overcomes the world – our faith.” (1 John
5:1-5)
Reflection. Aloysius was often held up, in my
experience, as a perfect youth who had overcome all temptations and was “angelic.”
How quickly we empty the saints of their humanity! What he did receive was a
grace, a gift of God, early on calling him to give his life to God. The trouble
was he was “high born” and destined to inherit a high position and much wealth.
His father was furious when Aloysius made his intentions known. Huge pressure
was put on the teenager, but he held his ground. Eventually his father relented.
Aloysius became a Jesuit but died four years later while serving the sick in
the epidemic of 1591.
Prayer. Lord, may we “overcome the world”,
may we choose the values of your way, each day. Amen
