PRAYER PAUSE
Saturday, 3 June 2017, The Uganda
Martyrs
I WEAR THIS
CHAIN
Pause. Enter into the stillness of God
within.
Reading: “For it is on account of the hope of
Israel that I wear this chain.” (Acts 28:16…32).
Reflection. The 22 Anglican and Catholic martyrs
of Uganda died because they were caught up in a fluid political situation and
it seems also the king had sexual designs on some of them. What ever the exact
reasons they showed great courage in standing up for the new faith they had
embraced and the Church has recognised their faith as an echo of the long
tradition going back to the early Churh. Our final readings today from Acts and
John echo the martyrdoms of Peter and Paul and the death of John and galvanise
our desire to be faithful in our own way in our own circumstances.
Prayer. Come Holy Spirit! Strengthen us
with the same Spirit that inspired our martyrs. Amen.
