MY
HAND SHALL NOT BE LAID ON YOU
Enter
into the stillness of God within.
Reading: “May the Lord be judge
between me and you … but my hand shall not be laid on you.” ( Samuel 24:3-21)
Reflection. This is the story of how
David had Saul in his power in the cave, yet David restrained from attacking him.
David was prepared to wait and allow God to sort out the dispute beteeen them.
One of the gifts of the Spirit Paul lists in Galaions 5 is self-control, where we
wait before responding. Ignatius of Loyola, in the meditations he proposes on
the Passion, has us consider how Jesus could destroy his enemies, bur doesn’t (#196).
In the film, Lincoln, the President
waits for a crucial few hours while Congress passes the bill abolishing
slavery, before he meets his opponetnts on the Confederate side. Self-control,
patience, restraint – call it what you will. It is a great quality. It gives
people time to digest the facts and discover the truth without being under pressure.
Prayer. Lord, teach us patience and
restraint in our relationships. May we grow in our attentiveness to your Spirit
in our hearts. Amen
