PRAYER PAUSE

ABSALOM,
MY SON! MY SON ABSALOM!
Enter
into the stillness of God within.
Reading: “Absolom my son! Would that
I had died in your place … The day’s victory was turned to mourning for all the
troops.” 2 Samuel (18:9 …19:3)
Reflection. David mourns for his son who
rebelled against him and has now been defeated and killed. The king would have
preferred he died in his son’s placet. It is a deeply prophetic story. Jesus
did die in our place. When Wellington defeated Napoleon at Waterloo he walked
the battlefield shocked and appalled at his victory with the dead of both sides
lying everywhwere. Such horror, shame and sorrow opens the way to reconciliation
and a new beginning. In Zimbabwe today there are those who search for a way to reconcile.
The first step is to allow compassion to surface within us and feel the pain of
others.
Prayer. Lord, help us to open our
hearts to compassion for others – especially our “enemies”. Amen.
