FROM NAZARETH?

PRAYER PAUSE

Thursday 5 January 2017

FROM NAZARETH?

Pause. Enter into the stillness of God within.

Reading: “From Nazareth?” said Nathaniel, “Can anything good come from that place?” (John 1:43-51)

Reflection. In a striking little scene Nathaniel moves from scepticism and even hostility to awareness and enthusiasm. What happened? His friend, Philip, tells him, “we have found the one we have been waiting for.” Nathaniel thinks he is crazy. Philip patiently says, “Come and see for yourself!” Nathaniel, doubtful, says “OK, no harm in that.” Then he meets Jesus and a new world opens for him. We could call Nathaniel a model of what the people of the East call ‘awareness’ or ‘enlightenment.’ He moves to another level of consciousness. He is one of those in John’s gospel whose eyes are opened, who come out of the dark into the light.

Prayer. Lord Jesus, as we begin this year open our eyes to see the world around us with rinsed eyes. Amen
