LOVE YOUR
ENEMIES
Pause. Enter into the stillness of God
within.
Reading: “Instead, love your enemies and do
good, and lend without any hope of return.” (Luke 6:27-38)
Reflection. These words of Jesus go to the heart
of the message he has for the world. How do we build a world in which we live
as brothers and sisters? How do we break down barriers between migrants and
settled people, between Irish Nationalists and Unionists, Nuer and Dinka, ISIS
and Iraqis? We see flashes of success with the first two pairs and seemingly
insurmountable barriers with second. It stretches the human heart to the limit
to breach the walls of deep seated animosity. Yet we see it happening on the
world stage and also on the domestic where families struggle to reconcile their
differences and communities reach out to those on the margins. Slowly, we are
heeding the words of Jesus
Prayer. Lord, help us to open our hearts to
one another and break down the barriers that divide us. Amen.
