PRAYER PAUSE
Wednesday, 2 August, Petere Faber
A DEMONSTRATION
OF THE SPIRIT
Pause. Enter into the stillness of God
within.
Reading: “My speech and my proclamation were
not with plausible words of wisdom but with a demonstration of the Spirit and
of power.” (1 Cor 2:1-5)
Reflection. Pope Francis can hardly be accused of
favouring his own society of the Jesuits but he did do something no other pope
would probably do: he fast tracked Peter Faber, Ignatius of Loyola’s first
companion, to sainthood. Peter crisscrossed Europe on foot at the time of the
Reformation and died young (40) seemingly worn out. But he is remembered for
the winning way – the “sweetness” – of his conversation. Many people were
convinced by his gentle approach and they remained strong in their faith at a
time of turmoil. He was renowned for the way he gave the Spiritual Exercises of
St Ignatius. He has always been one of Francis’ heroes.
Prayer. Lord, teach us to reach out to others
in our conversation and help them to know and love you more. Amen.
