PRAYER PAUSE
Thursday 9 February 2017
A HELPMATE
Pause. Enter into the stillness of God
within.
Reading: “But no helpmate suitable for man
was found for him.” (Genesis 2:18-25)
Reflection. The way the bible describes the
origin of gender sounds awkward, even male oriented. The woman is his “helper.”
But, however much we may wince today, the truth beneath the description is “awesome.”
The woman and the man complete one another in their own lives and together generate
new life. And despite all our failures in our cultures and in our Church to live
out our complementarity and equality we know that we need each other to become
fully human. The Catholic Church is on the brink of facing up to the implications.
It will be slow and contested but over time we will grow into a rich awareness
of our mutuality and we will rejoice and wonder why it took so long.
Prayer. Lord, help
us to rejoice in the gift of each other. Amen.
