PRAYER PAUSE

BE
MERCIFUL TO ME!
Enter
into the stillness of God within.
Reading: “But he beat his breast and
said, ‘God be merciful to me, a sinner!’ This man, I tell you, went home at
rights with God; the Pharisee did not.” (Luke 18:9-14)
Reflection. In our accompanying reading
today (Hosea 5:15-6:6) we read, “this love of
yours is like a morning cloud, like the dew that quickly disappears.”
Together the readings speak of sharp uncluttered love; a love that goes to the
heart – without explanations, conditions or moods. It is the love of the 14th
century mystic that wrote the Cloud of Unknowing, a classic description of what
it is to focus totally on piercing the cloud between women and men and
God. We cannot pierce it totally in this
life but we can reach out with all our being as the publican, or sinner, in the
parable in Luke does. And we can bring this uncomplicated love into our daily
life by looking beyond the hurts and irritations and disappointments in our
relationships and focus on the other person with simple love.
Prayer. Lord, teach us to love without
conditions as you love each of us as we are. Amen
