HE SENT HER
AWAY
Pause. Enter into the stillness of God
within.
Reading: “Abraham took some bread and a skin
of water and, giving them to Hagar, he put the child on her shoulder and sent
her away.” (Genesis21:5…20)
Reflection. It is hard to understand the
banishment of Hagar and Ismael.. It seems cruel. All I can think of is that it
is to emphasise the choice of Isaac and something far more cruel is about to
happen to him. In chapter 22, which we read tomorrow, we have the sacrifice of
Isaac. There is a slight upturn in the story as God points out a well to Hagar
and saves her life and that of Ismael. Wells, of course, have great
signigicance in the bible. They are a source of life for people and animals and
a sign of baptism. In seemingly roundabout ways God leads us all to life.
Prayer. Lord, author of life, help us to
trust your ways even if we do not understand them. Amen
