THE BETTER
PART
Pause. Enter into the stillness of God
within.
Reading: “Martha, Martha, you are worried and
distracted by many things: there is need
of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part, which will not be taken
from her.” (Luke 10:38- 42)
Reflection. The fourteenth century author of the Cloud of Unknowing devotes several chapters
to this brief incident in the gospel. Nowhere else do we have a description of domestic
chores, essential in every home on the planet. And yet here we have the golden
words that there is a better part. Mary sits and listens to the Lord and
relishes the joy of his presence. What can we say? We have our “must do” daily
tasks and yet in the midst of them we are called to choose that “better part,”
that raising of our mind to God, as a constant habit. And we will find time to
simply sit and listen.
Prayer. Lord, you invite us to listen to you
and be quiet in your presence. This is easier said than done! Help us to move
towards this “better part.” Amen.
