A SABBATH
FOR THE LORD
Pause. Enter into the stillness of God
within.
Reading: The Lord said; “Remember
the Sabbath and keep it holy. For six days you shall labour and do all your
work, but the seventh day is a sabbath for the Lord your God.” (Exodus 20:1-17)
Reflection. Pope Francis uses the biblical
teaching on the Sabbath to reinforce his message about our relationship with the
earth. “The responsibility for God’s earth means that human beings, endowed with
intelligence, must respect the laws of nature and the delicate equilibria
existing … (Laudato Si # 68). Cain got it wrong when he killed his brother
Abel with the result that “when you till the earth it will no longer yield up
its strength to you” (Gen 4:12). The ancient teaching on the Sabbath reminds us
to treat the earth with restraint and respect and that our relationships with
others extends to our relationship to nature. Everything is interconnected,
Francis never tires of saying in his letter.
