THE
MAN CALLED JUDAS
Pause. Enter into the stillness of God
within.
Reading: “Then one of the twelve,
the man called Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests and said, ‘What are
you prepred to give me if I hand him over to you?” (Matthew 26:14-25)
Reflection. ‘One of the twelve!’ ‘One of
us!’ It was so painful for the gospel writers to recall the treachery of Judas.
It could have been any of them. We may rush to say we would never have done
such a thing but surely the point is; we could have. There are so many evil
things we could have done in our life. Ignatius, in his Spiritual Exercises,
has us give ‘a cry of wonder’ – something he experienced at Manresa – that I
was saved from such a fate. And he has us go on to pray that we may be ‘filled
with horror’ as a result of ‘understanding the disorder of my actions.’ It is
easy to pigeonhole Judas with the baddies in history but there is something of
Judas in all of us.
Prayer. Lord, let us know the
horror of what we are capable of and fill us with gratitude that you have saved
us from following through on our worst impules. Amen.
