BORN FROM ABOVE
Pause. Be still
in the presence of Jesus and Nicodemus
Reading: “Unless
a person is born from above he cannot see the kingdom of God.” (John 3: 1-8)
Reflection. We
have exhausted all the accounts of Jesus’ appearances to his disciples after his
resurrection. Now we return to some earlier passages in John and read them anew
in the light of the resurrection. It is through baptism that we make the death
and rising of Jesus our own. He calls us to be with him in his engagement in
the daily events of life. Through baptism we become one with him in our work,
our struggles, our joys and ultimately we are united with in the fullness of
life. Nicodemus can’t get hold of this. Jesus talks of being born from above
and Nicodemus asks, “How can one be born again?” Jesus doesn’t answer directly
but ploughs on with his insistence: “What is born of the flesh is flesh; what
is born of the Spirit is spirit.”
Prayer. Lord, we now
enter days and weeks when we can bathe in the joy of your rising from the dead
and what it means for us and for the world. Help us to do just that. Amen.
